In addition, while the grand prize Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin Award is normally given to the top individual entry, because of the cleverness and creativity of so many of the student entries from Swallow this year, this year's grand prize was awarded to the Swallow 6th Grade Team.

Students brainstormed projects to submit during their SOAR block, a daily 30 minute period all Swallow students have to receive targeted support or enrichment opportunities based on their learning needs and goals.  Staff members Marge Mosey and Dianna Van Mullem assisted students in fleshing out their inventions and completing their entries.

Superintendent Melissa Thompson commented, "This award is outstanding and a testament to the growth in emphasis we have had in our Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math programming over the past five years along with the value of the extension opportunities provided for students during SOAR."  Student winners were commended during the June School Board meeting.
